Important tips for inexpensive way of updating kitchens

Filed under: Custom cabinetry — admin @ 4:24 am

Revitalizing a dated or tired kitchen may seem like a scary task, especially when the budget is limited. But it needn’t be. Here are some reasonably inexpensive ways to bring new character to that old kitchen.

Cabinets
One of the most satisfying improvements comes from simply painting old cabinetry, giving it a fresh new look. Nearly any surface can be painted provided you do a thorough preparation. Remove hardware and hinges, then clean cabinetry with a strong solution of TSP (Trisodium Phosphate). Rinse well, allow cabinets to dry thoroughly and then follow by sanding the surface with 120-grit sandpaper, wiping up any sand dust, and you’re ready to apply a thin coat of super enthusiast primer.
Allow to dry overnight and repeat the sanding, this time using finer 150-grit sandpaper. Give cabinets a final clean and apply a coat of paint. For conventional cupboards, a wash of antiquing glaze will lend them old-world charm. Splurge on new hardware. To give a standard kitchen a more custom look, consider exchanging a pair of solid cabinet doors for glass-front versions which bring decorative dishes and glassware into the spotlight. Add patterned wallpaper behind shelves to heighten the contact. If you are working with slab front cabinets with a totally flat appearance, consider applying a wood moulding to the face of each door to create a “paneled” look.

Backsplash
Restore an unpleasant backsplash with well-priced ceramic tiles. Fashionable today are 4-inch by 6-inch subway tiles in bright white or ivory. Lay tiles in an offset bone pattern where vertical grout lines are spread out from one row to the next.
If current ceramic tiles are smooth (without a raised pattern) they can also be improved with a coat of paint. Just make sure to remove any gloss from the tiles so the primer can adhere properly. You might use melamine paint for this task, since it’s known for improved grip and stability (available at most paint stores and big box retailers).

Window Treatments
A kitchen has so many hard surfaces that a fabric window treatment is almost always a welcome addition. If a soft treatment doesn’t appeal, create a display area for porcelain and dishware by installing glass shelves in front of a sunny window. Or hang a stained-glass panel directly in front of an on hand window.

Flooring
An area carpet increases style and comfort underfoot. Sea grass lends texture to cool surfaces such as stone and vinyl. An oriental-style carpet provides conventional kindness.

Islands
An island, even a portable one, affords an additional work space and invaluable storage. It also acts as a favourite gathering spot during meal preparation. Choose a well-built countertop such as butcher’s block, stainless steel or granite.

Walls
Once kitchen cabinets are in place there is often little wall space left over, so a enterprising paint colour such as eggplant or charcoal may inject a dry kitchen with big personality. For display, install a family gallery that features black and white or sepia photos. Group photos by theme, say family vacations. Another idea to consider — frame a collection of children’s artwork and display it prominently.

How to transform and remodel the existing kitchen and pantry?

Filed under: Custom cabinetry — admin @ 5:20 am

The kitchen was originally poorly designed, and did not hold space efficiency. Indeed, “the existing kitchen was a good size [measuring approximately 15′x15′], but not lay out well at all”. “In order to give them additional storage at arm’s length, we took out a structural wall to include the custom floor-to-ceiling cabinets, a matching wood-paneled Sub-Zero refrigerator, additional storage and a desk that serves as a planning center”. We installed a new island topped with granite, angling it to aid traffic and add visual interest. She feels it further helps anchor the kitchen design, tying it together in terms of function and aesthetics. We also angled the perimeter tops in the same granite to give each spouse his/her own space. “They cook and entertain a lot, collaborating most when entertaining. And, the husband’s quite a cook, so he needs his own space in the kitchen, just as the wife does”. To that end, she divided the kitchen into different work centers/areas instead of setting up traditional work triangles. This way each spouse can work together or separately on different dishes or an entire meal without getting in each other’s way.

There is a cook center, prep center and clean-up center. Each skin a variety of appliances that include a U-Line wine cooler, a Vent-a-Hood ventilation hood and Thermador cook top, and a Kitchen Aid oven and dishwasher. She tucked the Kitchen Aid microwave away in a base cabinet, as it is mostly used to heat food when the on-the-go owners don’t have the time to cook. A warming drawer finishes the kitchen’s appliance match. Task-specific and other specialized storage options, such as pull-outs and deep drawers for pots and pans, complete each work center and the new pantry. The owners are now able to view what they have in that pantry at a look; everything is at their fingertips. In particular, the wife “loves” the new pantry area, which also has a special sideways pull-out that houses small appliances. It keeps them at the owners’ fingertips, and cleverly conceals them when not in use.

The custom, natural, buried-panel cabinetry is replete with stainless steel hardware and under cabinet lighting. The lighting in the room consists of recessed cans, as well as some “neat,” contemporary track lighting along with some pendants. All of the cabinetry features under cabinet task lighting, as well. While there is no direct natural light in the kitchen, it is immersed in light from the expanse of glass in the adjacent dining room, which overlooks a garden area in the plot. Warm Front our aesthetic improvements also begin and end with the custom cabinetry.

“The kindness of the cabinets is really the first thing you see as you enter the new kitchen, and the wife is thrilled with that”. She characterizes the new kitchen’s style as modern, explaining it this way: “It borders on contemporary, but it’s definitely not ‘extreme’ contemporary. It has the warmth of the mahogany cabinets, with shiny granite countertops that give the kitchen lots of movement and visual interest, as well as its subtle color palette: warm copper and gold with some black accents.” “The type and use of granite created a direct contrast to the simple beauty of the cabinets”. “And to keep the room’s classic contemporary style, we ran the granite up the wall to the base of the upper cabinets, giving the room a smooth, simple, yet elegant look”. In short, the result is “classic, contemporary, and warm inviting… The owners love being in there and benefiting from the functionality of the room. Everything is within sight range and easily accessible, and they find cooking together easier because they no longer get in each other’s way”.

Creating the custom cabinetry

Filed under: Custom cabinetry — admin @ 4:45 am

The following information may be used in creating the custom cabinetry that would help warm the contemporary style of the kitchen and the rest of the home.

OPENING DESIGN DOORS
The choice of door style is what truly dictated the warm, fashionable style the kitchen in this home received. We went with a full-overlay slab door, which is fairly modern in feel. But the wood variety we chose really warmed the space up. It was Makore Fiddle back, which is a type of mahogany.

The warmth was continued onto the floor where Santos mahogany was applied. “It’s a little darker and redder than the cabinetry. To further maintain the warmth of the wood all over the kitchen we used all natural finishes. Hafele pulls were also applied to all of the cabinets.Other natural wood touches that warm the contemporary feel of the kitchen include framed arches in natural mahogany.

WATER WORLD
After the door style and wood species were selected, “we then set about locating the different elements in the kitchen”. We extended the Verde Vecchio granite that tops the island on two sides in order to create space to eat. They used the same granite for the rest of the kitchen countertops.Next, so as not to clutter the kitchen, we moved the microwave into a nearby walk-in pantry they created to house the recycling center and the feeding area for the dog. The microwave was something that was never used much in this household.

However, no other function was deemed secondary by the owners, so the duo incorporated the aforementioned hood, a 36″ Miele cooktop, a Miele double oven, a Thermador warming drawer, a 42″ Sub-Zero side-by-side refrigerator/freezer, several Sub-Zero refrigerator drawers and Fisher & Paykel double dishdrawers – plus, a flat-screen TV installed underneath one of the cabinets that flips up when not in use.

LIGHTENING UP
Lighting also played a key role  kitchen design. [In fact], because there was so much wood used, we cranked up the lighting. To start, we installed standard buried can lights, but amped up the kindness by inserting special glass lenses they obtained from W.A.C. Lighting. The lenses gave the kitchen a subtle glow. The duo also installed amber-colored pendants over the island.

To further brighten the kitchen, We kept the wall color and backsplash light. A creamy beige color adorns the walls while marble tile in the same kind makes up the backsplash. The tiles’ curved corners add texture, as well. The lighter wall color and backsplash plus the lighting design give the kitchen a “soft, beautiful” feeling, .
