Glossary - I
-
Indirect Lighting:
-
Luminaries that distribute 95-to-100 percent of their light upward to be reflected by the ceiling.
-
Instant Start Fluorescent Lamp:
-
A fluorescent lamp intended for starting by a high voltage without preheating of the electrodes.
-
Incandescent Lamp:
-
Where the light is created by heating a Tungsten filament. The filament is contained in a glass bulb filled with an inert gas
(nitrogen or rare gas) that prevents it from oxidizing, and then delays the vaporization of the filament material. Incandescent lamps
are available in actually many forms; the most common are general service lamps with pear-shaped, clear and matt bulbs.
-
Induction Lighting:
-
Gases could be excited directly by radio-frequency or even microwaves from a coil, which creates induced electromagnetic fields. This is called induction lighting and it also differs from a conventional discharge that uses electrodes to carry current into the arc.
Induction lamps have no electrodes inside the chamber and normally, therefore, have longer life than standard lamps. Genera® is an example of an induction lamp.
-
Illumination:
-
Supplying light to any area. Also refers to the density of light over an above a given area i.e. High illumination refers to the high density of light.
-
Intensity:
-
Is a measure of the time-averaged energy flux and amount of light striking a given area. For bulbs alone this is measured in terms of lumens while for a lighting fixture it is measured in lux (lumens/sq. meter).
-
Interior Lighting:
-
Light and light fixtures planned to be used indoors.
